When Covid shut the world down a year ago, I thought I’d be back photographing births by June! But June came and went, then school started virtually in September, then it was Halloween and then it was Christmas! I missed my birth clients so much, but I REALLY missed the birth community. I missed the bonds I had been forming with my fellow birth workers and I missed learning from them! I didn’t really realize how much until I attended my first birth of 2020 in October. I missed the anticipation leading up the birth. The quiet, peaceful drives in the middle of the night. The slow burn of labor, followed by the chaotic thrill of delivery. Driving home, endorphins flowing, as the sun rises above the horizon. In between taking pictures I looked in envy at my client’s doula and midwives, realizing that they hadn’t missed months of this the way I had. So on my way home from that birth, I decided to become a doula and was certified this past January. Now I can be there for all those moments — with or without my camera. 🙂
