Hi I'm Nicole

Newborn

I love mother’s day, and it’s the one day of the year that I do like to be spoiled…just a little bit! I thought it would be a neat idea to write a post to give you (and the one’s shopping for you) a Mother’s Day Guide: What Moms REALLY Want.

If you’re a mom reading this, I’d love for you to add your ideas if they’re not already listed. If you’re someone shopping for a mom, use my ideas below to give them one of the best Mother’s Day gifts ever.

Mother’s Day Guide: What Moms REALLY Want

Of course, you’ll want to take into consideration the person you are purchasing, making, or creating a gift for. If you know they love some of the things below when it’s not Mother’s Day, then that’s an indication that they’ll absolutely love receiving it as a gift. The ideas are also from my personal perspective and I also included a few other ideas from some other moms.

Mommy & Me Photoshoot

I couldn’t start this Mother’s Day guide without stating the obvious! Moms are usually the photographers for their families, so give her the gift of getting IN the pictures for once!

A Clean House

For this Mother’s Day gift idea, you can deliver it several different ways. One way is to solicit your children to clean the home. You can also hire a house cleaner. Make it fun by giving her a coupon that she can “cash” in that says “A day off from cleaning.”

Plan a Day Trip

The key to this gift idea is to relieve her from doing the planning. Most moms naturally take the wheel with planning trips and every aspect of them. Instead, surprise her with a pre-planned day trip or mini vacation. One thing I love to do is take a road trip up to the mountains and go for a hike near Asheville and then go out for a late lunch/early dinner afterwards. Here’s a list of some great hikes you can do in the NC mountains! Or, if hiking isn’t your thing–but a trip to Asheville is — a visit to the Biltmore Estate is always a good idea!

Something Homemade

Homemade gifts are one of the most thoughtful gift ideas, especially for moms. If you have children, there are TONS of ideas that use their handprints, footprints, or family photos. Homemade gifts that she can use are also a win-win. Think of gifts like flower planters, jewelry bowls (made from clay), candles, etc. Heartfelt notes and cards are also a great homemade idea. Here’s a pretty extensive Pinterest board with every idea you could think of!

Spa Day

There are two ways to gift mom a spa day. Consider setting up your home in a way that mimics a spa. Run some bath water with bath salts and rose petals. Prepare a table for a massage and have her favorite snack and drink prepared to enjoy throughout. Or, you can purchase a coupon or voucher to her favorite local spa. This is a good time to purchase all the works! My favorite spot is a day pass to The Ballantyne. Get a massage and then order lunch by the pool while you read a good book! Heaven.

Alone Time

Alone time becomes a very special commodity to a mom, to the point where we’re not quite sure what to do with it if we get it. Think of a way to give the mom in your life some alone time to do whatever she wants. This could be shopping, reading a book uninterrupted, journaling, or even binge watching her favorite show. She’ll surely appreciate any alone time she can get.

Sleeping In

Giving her the opportunity to sleep in is an amazing gift. Top it off with breakfast in bed and she’s sure to not only feel the love but all feel the energy to be able to tackle another day. This may not seem like much of a gift, but she will appreciate it more than you can imagine.

More Ideas to Consider:

Below are a few more ideas that I got from other moms:

  • Time alone with the kids (especially for working moms).
  • A home-cooked meal she didn’t have to make (or do the shopping and planning for).
  • A hotel stay away (for a night).
  • New furniture or home decor.
  • Professional family photos.
  • A day to work in the garden.
  • An arts and crafts class (either with the spouse or kids).
  • Breakfast, lunch, or dinner at her favorite restaurant.
  • A shopping spree with friends.
  • A break from traditional household duties (for longer than a day).

Final Thoughts

Mother’s Day will be here before you know it and instead of guessing what to get the mom in your life, consider this Mother’s Day Guide: What Mom REALLY Want to gift her something she’ll love. Do you have any other gift ideas to add to the list or something you enjoyed receiving in the past? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Nyxie says:

This is the perfect post and I can’t agree more! I wrote something similar this year for a local newsletter about the real gift you can give for Mother’s Day (March here in the UK), and while material things are nice, practical help is always better!

  2. Beth says:

I agree with all these. Specially a nice day out and a spa. It’s relaxing and I personally want to create more memories instead of material gifts.

  3. Oohhhh…I see many mamas agree on alone time. The ones I’ve talked to here crave for time alone and they just don’t seem to get it anymore.

  4. I came across your article on “What Moms Really Want for Mother’s Day” and was thoroughly impressed with the thoughtfulness and creativity of your gift ideas. Your writing style was engaging and relatable, making for an enjoyable read. Keep up the fantastic work!

  5. Girl, this is what I want for my birthday. Like forget all the gifts and parties, give me a whole weekend break. Just me alone.
